This past summer, I had the opportunity to study abroad in London and take a course focused on social sustainability. The experience gave me a deeper understanding of how food systems, health, and community spaces intersect—both globally and locally. Through immersive field trips and hands-on learning, I was able to connect classroom concepts to real-world examples of sustainability in action.
One of the most impactful experiences was visiting a local farm just outside of London. We spent the day learning about sustainable farming techniques, from soil health to crop rotation. I helped weed garden beds and plant fresh vegetables—then tasted the crispest, most flavorful lettuce I’ve ever had. That simple moment helped me realize how disconnected we often are from where our food comes from, and how empowering it is to understand and support the process behind it.
Another highlight was Mercato Metropolitano, a community-focused food market that emphasizes sustainability and cultural diversity. Sampling farm-to-table dishes and homemade gelato crafted from fresh ingredients reminded me how food can serve as a bridge between cultures and support local economies. Similarly, our guided garden tour through Hyde Park showed me how green spaces play a critical role in community wellness. We drank herbal tea made directly from plants in the garden, while learning about native species and their environmental benefits.
These experiences weren’t just educational—they were transformational. They reminded me that business has the power to support wellness, sustainability, and social connection all at once. As I move toward a career in marketing and management, I’m more committed than ever to working with purpose-driven companies that champion these values.
